Kentuckiana Pain Specialists Reviews — Evaluating a stem-cell therapy claim

The practice lists stem-cell therapy, but the procedure name does not establish that a product is FDA-approved for chronic pain or joint disease. Product identity and regulatory status are the first questions.

Identify the product

Ask whether cells come from your own body or a donor, how they are processed, and what exactly is injected. Request the product name, intended diagnosis, and the evidence for that exact use. General stories about regeneration are not a substitute for clinical evidence.

The word stem-cell covers different products and procedures. General evidence about one product cannot be assumed to apply to another, even when both are advertised for joint pain.

Check regulatory status

The FDA cautions that regenerative medicine products are not approved for chronic pain or orthopedic conditions simply because they are offered in a clinic. Ask whether the proposed product has FDA approval for your condition or is part of a properly authorized trial.

Clarify whether the clinic describes the treatment as standard care, an investigational procedure, or participation in a formal trial. Ask for the trial registration and consent materials if research is claimed. A patient's own cells are not automatically risk-free or approved.

Compare costs and follow-up

Request a written total price, what it includes, how adverse events are managed, and what happens if there is no benefit. Review better-established options for the diagnosed condition before paying for a procedure.

Compare the proposed endpoint with realistic alternatives for the diagnosed joint or pain condition. Ask how adverse events would be recorded and who provides follow-up months later. An expensive procedure needs more than before-and-after testimonials to justify its expected benefit.

Questions to ask

  • What exact cell product and regulatory status apply?
  • What controlled evidence supports this use for my diagnosis?
  • What are the full costs, risks, and alternatives?
